

These ‘meaning gaps’ are freighted with the hermeneutic potential of Riffaterre’s ‘ungrammaticalities’, constituting a ‘guideline to semiosis’. Employing a combination of narratological and Schenkerian analysis, this thesis argues that there are significant moments of divergence between the gendered narratives outlined by the libretto and the music in Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé.

This thesis seeks to contribute towards the emerging discourse in Ravel studies concerning gender, as well as adding to the ongoing work in musical narratology, especially as regards ballet, to which very little narratological attention has been given. Therefore, undoubtlessly, in the context of musical analysis it is vitally important to be acquainted with Schenker Analysis in order to understand todays music. Today, the principles of Schenker Analysis is applied on a wide musical spectrum constituted of a-tonal works, jazz, popular music and ethnic musics.

Ravel's important works in the "New-classical" style, and the stylistic structure of the suite's sections has been mentioned. In addition, the process of the emergence of the "Le Tombeau de Couperin" suite for solo piano, which is one of M. French composers with works in "New-classical" thinking were also included, and the place and importance of Maurice Ravel in 20th century French music were also evaluated in this context. In this study, the "neo-classicalist" understanding, which has become an important trend in 20th century music, has been researched and information has been given about the composers who have written works in this style. This trend, which is classified as Neo-classism, spread to Europe in a short time and influenced the composers, including Ravel, in search of a stronger identity for French music.
